 
The history of the first Ukrainian gymnasium began in 1863 when Mykolayev women's school of the first class was opened.
From 1864 till 1870, it became Mykolayev Mariinska women's school of the first class. From The 20th of September 1870, Mykolyaev First Mariinska gymnasium worked till 1918.

In Soviet times, it was a secondary school ¹5. From 1993 in this building, which was built in 1890-1891 the First Ukrainian pedagogical gymnasium began to work. On The 12th of January 1998, it became the First Ukrainian gymnasium.
 According to the order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine from The 24th of February 2003, ¹104 the gymnasium got the name of Mykola Arkas, famous Ukrainian historian, composer and public figure.
The language of teaching is Ukrainian.
The main directions of work – The First Ukrainian Gymnasium is a secondary school of the II and III grades with intensive learning of Ukrainian and English, which gives scientific and cultural education to pupils.
The main aim of the gymnasium is to give gifted pupils possibilities to get different education, to realize their creative abilities for the benefit of our native culture, and sovereignty of all Ukrainian people.
